BHPB and Rio announce Pilbara expansion contracts

Rio Tinto mining in the Pilbara.

RCR’s contract is valued at approximately $30m and includes the design, manufacture and supply of three heat recovery steam generators and associated equipment. According to RCR, work will commence immediately and is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2013.

RCR's managing director, Paul Dalgleish, said it is the first major power generation contract RCR has won using AE&E Australia, which was acquired by RCR in May 2011.

KBR will provide EPCM services to install fuel infrastructure in port facilities at Cape Lambert and Dampier, mines at Brockman and West Angelas and a maintenance yard located near Dampier.

When the project is complete, Rio Tinto will use its rail network to transport diesel to hubs for storage and redistribution to mines and power generation facilities.

According to KBR, this new fuel network will reduce the requirement for road trains to transport fuel 400km south from Port Hedland on public roads.
