Simon Ridge.

Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore said Ridge was a central figure in the State’s recent safety reforms, which introduced a cost recovery system that delivers extra funding for more mines inspectors.

Reforms flowed from the 2009 Kenner Review of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994, following a spate of mining fatalities.

“The Western Australian Government is committed to overhauling the way safety and health in the resources industry are regulated,” Moore said.

“[T]his appointment will ensure a smooth transition to continue the mines safety work under way and implement reforms proposed for the petroleum sector.”

Ridge will continue in the role of State Mining Engineer while he heads up the Resources Safety division.
