Adrok’s investments heating up Stove says
Edinburgh-based technology company Adrok has secured an investment of over £3 million from major client Teck Resources to advance its novel virtual drilling technology.
The ADR scanner.
Teck is a Canadian resource company focused on copper, coking coal and zinc. Adrok’s Atomic Dialectic Resonance scanner (ADR) identifies rock and mineral types by shooting a narrow beam of electromagnetic radiation (or radio waves) into the ground and interpreting information from the echoed signal, which varies according to the geology that is encountered.
More specifically, when these radio waves cross a boundary between different types of material, an echo is reflected back to the scanner. Different materials interact with radio waves in specific ways, imparting their own fingerprint on the radio wave that they echo, which can reveal valuable information for explorers.
Essentially, the echoes can be interpreted to ascertain what rocks, minerals or otherwise lie under a particular patch of ground.
Adrok’s managing director, Gordon Stove, coined the term virtual drilling for the technique. Adrok says the arrangement with Teck will allow the company to seek more commercial opportunities and further develop the technology.
“We intend to grow the company rapidly next year… We look to advance our technology by producing next generation on and offshore systems which will generate new revenue opportunities. In many cases it is expected that our service will reduce the need for extensive drilling, dramatically decreasing both the time and costs incurred between discovery and initial production.
“Although it is difficult to imagine a situation where conventional drilling and sampling would not be required to advance a mineral development project through to production, it is possible to imagine a situation where Adrok’s virtual drilling technology could significantly reduce the cost to assess an opportunity and reduce the risks associated with investing in extensive drill programs,” Stove said.
