Picking winners tough at training and skills Awards
Judges found it hard to select clear winners at the 2010 Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards due to the high calibre of nominees.

According to Mining Industry Skills Centre chief executive Derek Hunter, the Trainee of the Year and Innovation Award categories were so difficult a highly commended award was needed to recognise outstanding initiatives. Mary Clark, hosted by Rio Tinto Alcan Gove, was highly commended in the trainee award and QMEA – Moranbah State High School took the same honours for the Innovation-Workforce Planning and Development category.
“It was great to see two organisations presented with highly commended awards in their respective categories. The incorporation of these commendations augers well for the future of our industry,” Mr Hunter said.
Anglo American Metallurgical Coal, Gladstone Area Group Apprentices and Queensland Alumina were among the big winners this year.
Reserve Training and Safety and Lennon Training also won awards from an ‘overwhelming’ number of high quality entrants. The Awards were presented last Friday night (September 3).
Over 180 people attended the 12th annual awards night, which is the culmination of an in-depth judging process and face-to-face interview.
Mr Hunter also called the awards the resources industry’s most prestigious training and skilling awards and showcase the leading work being undertaken by companies, trainers, individuals, trainees and apprentices”
