Training award winners in mining

The Mining Industry Skills Centre announced the winners from the 2009 Training Awards Dinner held in Brisbane on September 25th.

The finalists for each category were selected after an in-depth judging process which included strict nomination criteria and a face-to-face interview with the Awards judging panel.
The winners include MRAEL, Xstrata Copper, BMA, Queensland Alumina Ltd, Easternwell Group, Donaldson Coal and Northern Project Contractors. Organisations that were highly commended for their entry were Sinclair Knight Merz, Anglo Coal, Woodside Energy and Inseam Australia.
The event attracted more than 250 people to attend the eleventh annual Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards to recognise the finalist’s outstanding commitment and leadership in workforce planning and development in the Australian resources industry.
After the success of the 2008 Training Awards, 2009 saw an overwhelming number of high-quality nominations and finalists were received from around Australia including Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.
The Skills Centre’s Training Awards are the resources industry’s most prestigious training and skilling awards and showcase the leading work being undertaken by companies, trainers, individuals, trainees and apprentices.
Mining Industry Skills Centre’s Team Leader – Instructional Design, John Burton, said that this year’s nominations made selecting finalists and winners really challenging for the judges.
“The 2009 Training Awards attracted a lot of high calibre award entries and in most categories made selecting an eventual winner a difficult task. It is really pleasing to see a lot of encouraging work being done in the industry to promote learning and development initiatives,” said Mr Burton.
For the first time in the Training Awards history, the Skills Centre introduced a highly commended award in each category when choosing a winner proved to be difficult, in order to further recognise the initiatives being undertaken by companies and individuals for their development.
“It was great to see five organisations presented with highly commended awards in their respective categories. The incorporation of this award is not only a testament to the work being done by the recipients being commended, but also the winners.”
The 2009 Mining Industry Skills Centre Training Awards Dinner was held following the conclusion of the Skills Centre’s annual Conference, which this year was themed ‘Explore. Exchange. Equip - Unearthing success from a skilled workforce.’
